10 May, 2024The Michelin Guide, known worldwide for its gastronomic recommendations, leaps into the hotel sector with a new distinction to highlight excellence in accommodation. 12 have received two Keys and 80, one, out of a total of 97 award-winning hotels.
At first, it was France, then the United States, now it has been Spain, and in the coming months, it will be Italy and Japan. The Michelin Guide promised a great novelty for 2024 and is gradually expanding the spectrum of hotels and accommodations recommended by the century-old publication. Spain thus becomes the third country with a list of hotels that will hold at least one Michelin Key this year. Specifically, there will be 97 accommodations, of which 5 have three, 12 hotels with two and 80 hotels with one.
97 award-winning establishments in Spain
The five hotels with three keys got all the attention on the 2024 release: Atrio Restaurante Hotel (Cáceres), Terra Dominicata Hotel & Winery (Tarragona), Mandarin Oriental Ritz (Madrid), Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine (Valladolid) and Torre del Marqués Hotel Spa & Winery (Teruel) are, according to the prestigious guide, the best hotels in Spain. This is followed by twelve hotels with two keys, four of which are located on the island of Mallorca. The Balearic Islands are the region with the most award-winning hotels, with 24 establishments, along with Catalonia, with 22. They are two of the most common destinations for students of the Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality and Culinary Management and the Master in Hospitality Management. In fact, some of the hotels that have come to EUHT StPOL in recent years to recruit young talent have also been recognized. This is the case of the Mandarin Oriental Ritz in Madrid (3 keys), the Mandarin Oriental in Barcelona (2 keys), the Hotel Arts or the Hotel Marqués de Riscal (1 key), among others.
All the hotels awarded by the Michelin Guide have been selected by an expert team based on anonymous stays or visits, independently of existing labels, tourism stars and pre-established quotas, that were conducted throughout several months.
One, Two and Three Michelin Keys
Just like the famous Stars, that, in the Michelin Guide restaurant selection, indicate establishments offering the best culinary experiences, the Keys reveal accommodations in the Guide’s hotel selection that offer the most outstanding stays. They are a new benchmark for travelers, qualifying the experience in broad terms, rather than focusing solely on amenities.
One MICHELIN Key: a very special stay. This is a true gem with its own character and personality. It may break the mould, offer something different or simply be one of the best of its type. Service always goes the extra mile and it provides so much more than similarly priced establishments.
Two MICHELIN Keys: an exceptional stay. Somewhere truly unique and exceptional in every way, where a memorable experience is always guaranteed. A hotel of character, personality and charm that’s run with obvious pride and considerable care. Eye-catching design or architecture, and a real sense of the locale make this an exceptional place to stay.
Three MICHELIN Keys: an extraordinary stay. It’s all about astonishment and indulgence here – this is the ultimate in comfort and service, style and elegance. It is one of the world’s most remarkable and extraordinary hotels and a destination in itself for that trip of a lifetime. All the elements of truly great hospitality are here to ensure any stay will live long in the memory and hearts.
