24 September, 2020During your bachelor’s degree, technical degree or master’s degree studies, studying a semester abroad or doing an internship in different countries will allow you to have a global vision of your education and experience. Moreover, to study abroad – either through a university exchange, through the Erasmus program or doing internships in hotels and / or restaurants – carries a series of benefits that will make your career take off. And even more in an industry such as hospitality and tourism, in which having international experience will open you many doors.
These are some of the benefits of study abroad:
1. Improve your Curriculum Vitae
Many people agree that international mobility during studies allows you to grow on a personal but also professional level. Having experience in different parts of the world and having studied and lived in different cultural environments will give you a much broader vision of the profession.
Moreover, your Curriculum Vitae (CV) will become much richer in experience; an aspect that many companies in the hospitality industry value when deciding on one candidate or another in a hiring process.
2. Personal and professional development
Dedicating part or all of your studies to carry out an international experience will make you develop new skills, especially those related to adaptability and flexibility, maturity and independence, self-confidence or socialization and dealing with others, in addition to becoming more open-minded.
Soft skills, all of them, that today have a remarkable weight in the hospitality industry and that are one of the keys to have a successful career.
3. Languages
Studying abroad is associated, in most cases, with learning or improving the language or languages of the destination. Thus, having more than one international experience during your studies will not only allow you to discover new destinations and make new friends, it is also a unique opportunity to learn one or more languages.
A fact that will be very useful during your professional career, because in the hospitality sector being able to communicate in different languages is a must.
4. Professional network
It is known that the experience of studying abroad is synonymous of making new friendships, but also new contacts in the professional sector. A fact that takes on special relevance during internships, in which you are not only in contact with students and friends, but also with professionals from the hospitality industry in a real work environment. This will make it possible that, beyond the experience, you can recover the professional network for future occasions in your professional career.
